Georgia Pharmacy Technician Requirements and Regulations

Pharmacy
  • Technician shall mean those support persons utilized in pharmacies whose responsibilities are to provide nonjudgmental technical services concerned withthe preparation for dispensing of drugs under the direct supervision and responsibility of a pharmacist.

Georgia pharmacy technician certification recognition

  • The Georgia Board of Pharmacy only recognizes as certified technicians those who completed a Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) nationally certified pharmacy technician program.

Pharmacy Technician Identification

  • Pharmacy Technicians must be easily identifiable by wearing a name badge at all times.

Georgia Pharmacist to Pharmacy Technician Ratio

  • The pharmacist to pharmacy technician ratio may not exceed one pharmacist providing direct supervision of two pharmacy technicians; however, the pharmacist to pharmacy technician may not exceed one pharmacist providing direct supervision to three pharmacy technicians if one of the technicians is nationally certified.
  • Only pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and interns / externs may be work in the pharmacy prescription department.

Georgia State Board of Pharmacy

  • The Georgia State Board of Pharmacy is an eight-member board appointed by the Governor to protect, promote and preserve the public health, safety and welfare of the citizens of Georgia. The Board is composed of seven licensed practicing pharmacists and one consumer member.
  • They are responsible for the regulation of pharmacists and pharmacies in Georgia. The Board reviews applications, administers examinations, licenses qualified applicants and regulates the practice of licensees throughout the state.
  • Complaints are investigated and, if warranted, disciplinary action may be taken by the Board. Board meetings are held approximately twelve times each year at the Secretary of State's office in Macon and are open to the public. Persons wishing to bring matters for the Board's consideration should submit a written request to the office.

Georgia Pharmacy Association

  • The mission of the Georgia Pharmacy Association shall be to promote and enhance the profession of pharmacy and the practice standards of its practitioners. Further, the Association shall endeavor to heighten the public's perception of the profession of pharmacy and pharmacists, and to promote the value of pharmacy services to the health and welfare of the general public.
