The Program

Pharmacy Technician

Pharmacy technician work under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist and perform many pharmacy-related functions. Some of the many duties pharmacy technicians perform are preparing prescriptions, counting pills, extemporaneous compounding and preparing parenteral medications. Pharmacy technicians work in a wide variety of practice settings, including community pharmacies, hospitals, home health care, mail order and long-term care facilities. Since dispensing pharmaceuticals affects a person's life, it is critical that a good candidate be detailed oriented, precision minded, and understand the importance of accuracy.

Pharmacy Technician Program

Hutchinson Community College Pharmacy Technician Program:

  • Students learn about pharmacology through an overview of drug classifications, common drug side effects and drug use/abuse.
  • The program is designed as an online program.
  • It includes practical learning experience in community and hospital settings.
  • All pharmacy technician courses must be completed with a C or better in order to progress to the next course and/or successfully complete the certificate.

The Curriculum

Pharmacy Technician Program Curriculum

The curriculum consists of technical and general education support courses. This includes a variety of courses to prepare the student for success in either the hospital or community environment. After successful completion of the program, students are ready to sit for the national Pharmacy Technician Certification Examination offered by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board.

Admission Requirements

Application Process:
  1. Submission of an application for Hutchinson Community College.
  2. Submission of official high school transcript (or GED) and official transcripts for college level coursework must be submitted to the Records Office.
  3. Schedule an interview (in person or phone) with the Pharmacy Technician Program Coordinator.
  4. Applicant must take ASSET and Accuplacer tests given by college.
  5. Applicant must have no felony convictions related to drugs or pharmacy in order to participate in the pharmacy practicum.
