General Info

The College of Southern Nevada (CSN) is primarily a two-year college in Clark County, Nevada. The College of Southern Nevada is the largest public higher education institution in Nevada and the third largest of its kind in the nation. College of Southern Nevada is part of the Nevada System of Higher Education.

The Program

Pharmacy Technician Program

Pharmacy Technician Program prepares students for employment in the fields of:
  • Hospital Pharmacy
  • Retail Pharmacy
  • Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Industry
  • Mail Service
  • Home IV Therapy
The program provides education and training to prepare students to work in a hospital or retail pharmacy setting under the direction of a registered pharmacist. After successful completion of the program pre-requisites and admission into the program, the student will complete one semester of program coursework taught primarily on-line followed by a one semester practicum in one or more Las Vegas area clinical/retail settings. At the completion of the program, the student will be eligible for certification as a Pharmacy Technician by the Nevada State Board of Pharmacy and for employment in the pharmacy industry.

The Curriculum

Pharmacy Technology Program Curriculum

  • The one-year program in Pharmacy Technology is offered on the Charleston Campus of the College of Southern Nevada and leads to a Certificate of Achievement.
  • Pharmacy Technician Program provides education and training to prepare students to work in various pharmaceutical settings.
  • Courses are offered over two semesters via online instruction, classroom instruction, and directed work experience in pharmacies to develop your skills in the technical, procedural, and clerical tasks required in a pharmacy setting.
  • Students will complete coursework via online, classroom, and laboratory instruction, Students will also complete 320 hours of clinical internship experience in a pharmacy. Students must complete a mastery examination prior to being assigned to the internship.

Admission Requirements

The College of Southern Nevada's Pharmacy Technician Certificate of Achievement is a Limited Entry program. Therefore, all prerequisite requirements must be completed by the application deadline in order to be eligible for consideration. Students must be at least 18 years of age and a high school graduate or equivalent to participate in the practicum during the 2nd semester. A Social Security Number is also required. Students with misdemeanor convictions must contact the state board for clarification of licensure eligibility prior to applying to the program. Students with felony convictions are primarily ineligible for state licensure.   • Demonstrate broad competency in pharmacy techniques and procedures, pharmaceutical math, and pharmacology.
  • Demonstrate the relevant skills and competency necessary for licensure as a Nevada State Pharmacy Technician.
  • Demonstrate the skills and abilities necessary to seek gainful employment in the pharmaceutical field.
  • Demonstrate effective and ethical pharmacy practice techniques in accordance with defined state, federal, and professional industry guidelines and legal parameters.
  • Demonstrate skills and academic aptitude necessary for successful completion of the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Examination administered by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB), at their discretion.
