Pharmacy Technician Registration

Required
  1. To perform any duties in a pharmacy, including the duties of a pharmacy technician or pharmacy technician trainee, an individual must have an ACTIVE registration with the Texas State Board of Pharmacy (TSBP).
  2. To work in a pharmacy as a pharmacy technician or pharmacy technician trainee, you must be registered with the Texas State Board of Pharmacy (TSBP). Once you have received your registration from TSBP, and only then, may you work in a pharmacy and start your training.

Pharmacy Technician Education Requirements

Required
  1. Every pharmacy is required to provide pharmacy technicians/trainees initial on-the-job training.
  2. All pharmacy technicians/trainees are required to complete this training when they begin working in a pharmacy. The rules are very specific as to the areas that must be covered in these on-the-job training programs.
  3. On-the-job training is the only training required of pharmacy technicians/trainees and currently there is no requirement for a pharmacy technician to attend a formal education program.

Texas Pharmacy Technician Information

  1. Effective February 1, 2007, individuals who are not registered with the Board may not be employed as or perform the duties of a pharmacy technician or pharmacy technician trainee.
  2. Individuals who have previously applied and registered as a pharmacy technician, regardless of the pharmacy technician's current registration status, may not register as a pharmacy technician trainee.
  3. Individuals who apply and are qualified for both a pharmacy technician trainee registration and a pharmacy technician registration concurrently will not be considered for a pharmacy technician trainee registration.
  4. Registration for pharmacy technician trainees. An individual may register as a pharmacy technician trainee only once and the registration may not be renewed. A person may be designated as a pharmacy technician trainee for no more than two years and the requirements for registration as a pharmacy technician must be completed within the two year period.

Pharmacy Technician Trainee Registration Requirement

Required
  1. Each applicant for registration:
    1. shall have a high school or equivalent diploma (e.g., GED), or be working to achieve a high school or equivalent diploma. For the purposes of this subparagraph, an applicant for registration may be working to achieve a high school or equivalent diploma for no more than two years;
    2. shall complete the Texas application for registration; and
    3. may be required to meet all requirements necessary in order for the Board to access the criminal history record information, including submitting fingerprint information and paying the required fees.
  2. Once an applicant has successfully completed all requirements of registration, and the board has determined there are no grounds to refuse registration, the applicant will be notified of registration as a pharmacy technician trainee and of his or her pharmacy technician trainee registration number.
  3. Pharmacy technician trainee registrations expire two years from the date of registration or upon issuance of registration as a registered pharmacy technician, whichever is earlier.

Pharmacy Technician Registration Requirement

Each applicant for registration shall:
  1. have a high school or equivalent diploma (e.g., GED), or be working to achieve a high school or equivalent diploma. For the purpose of this clause, an applicant for registration may be working to achieve a high school or equivalent diploma for no more than two years; and
  2. either have:
    1. taken and passed the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board's National Pharmacy Technician Certification Examination or other examination approved by the board and have a current certification certificate; or
    2. been granted an exemption from certification by the board as specified in 297.7 of this title (relating to Exemption from Pharmacy Technician Certification Requirements); and
    3. complete the Texas application for registration;
    4. meet all requirements necessary in order for the Board to access the criminal history record information, including submitting fingerprint information and paying the required fees; and
    5. New pharmacy technician registrations shall be assigned an expiration date and the fee shall be prorated based on the assigned expiration date.
    6. Once an applicant has successfully completed all requirements of registration, and the board has determined there are no grounds to refuse registration, the applicant will be notified of registration as a registered pharmacy technician and of his or her pharmacy technician registration number. If the pharmacy technician applicant was registered as a pharmacy technician trainee at the time the pharmacy technician registration issued, the pharmacy technician trainee registration expires.
    7. An individual may use the title "Registered Pharmacy Technician" or "Ph.T.R." if the individual is registered as a pharmacy technician in this state.
    8. Pharmacy technician--An individual who is registered with the Board as a pharmacy technician and whose responsibility in a pharmacy is to provide technical services that do not require professional judgment regarding preparing and distributing drugs and who works under the direct supervision of and is responsible to a pharmacist.
    9. Pharmacy technician trainee--An individual who is registered with the board as a pharmacy technician trainee and is authorized to participate in a pharmacy's technician training program.
